Xanthate Safety Data Sheet

Basic Characteristics
Xanthan gum is a water-soluble polysaccharide salt that typically appears as a white or pale yellow powder with no distinct odor. It is capable of forming highly viscous colloidal solutions in water and exhibits resistance to acids, alkalis, salts, and heat, possessing stable chemical properties. As a substance of low toxicity, xanthan gum generally causes no irritation to the skin or eyes; however, airborne powder particles may form suspensions that, if inhaled, could cause mild respiratory discomfort. Therefore, appropriate protective measures should be adopted during handling to prevent dust inhalation or direct contact with the eyes.

Safety Precautions
When handling xanthan gum, operations should be conducted in a well-ventilated environment, and protective gear-including face masks, safety goggles, and gloves-should be worn to minimize the risk of dust inhalation and skin contact. Upon completion of handling tasks, the work area should be promptly cleaned and personal hygiene attended to in order to prevent dust accumulation. If powder enters the eyes, they should be immediately flushed with copious amounts of clean water for at least 15 minutes; in the event of inhalation or accidental ingestion, the affected individual should be moved to fresh air or given water to dilute the substance as soon as possible, and medical attention should be sought if necessary.

Storage, Handling, and Environmental Protection
Xanthan gum should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated location, away from direct sunlight and moisture, and kept separate from strong oxidizing agents and acidic chemicals. During handling, sealed containers should be utilized to prevent the dispersion of airborne dust. Small spills can be cleaned up using a damp cloth or absorbent materials; larger spills require dilution and treatment to prevent direct entry into water bodies. As a biodegradable polysaccharide, xanthan gum has a low environmental impact; nevertheless, waste disposal should be conducted in strict compliance with local environmental regulations to ensure both safety and environmental protection.
